The Russian Chronicles: A Thousand Years That Changed the World
Published in Hardcover by Clb (October, 1998)
Authors: Joseph F. Ryan, Orlando Figes, Lindsey Hughes, Robin Milner-Gulland, and Norman Stone
Average review score:

Finally a PRE-SOVIET Russian history book
I knew I had to pick buy this after I flipped through it at a book store. I have been half-heartedly searching for a couple years now for a book about Russian history that didn't focus on the 1917 revolution and the Cold War. Also, it's full of illustrations and sidebar articles that bring this subject to life. Just for interest reading, this book has been fascinating. From the Kievan Rus to the St. Petersburg czars, and all the interesting stuff in between like the Mongol invasions and Ivan the Terrible, is in here. It's a good light read, because it's not in lengthy novel form. It's my coffee table book.

Sailor Jerry Tattoo Flash
Published in Paperback by Distributed Art Publishers (February, 2001)
Author: Norman Collins
Average review score:

The Essential Flash Book
This book is absolutely beautiful. I have used a friend's copy to get ideas for my tattoos and I finally needed to buy my own copy. Sailor Jerry was/is the quintessential tattoo artist of the '40s-'70s and is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. People are once again appreciating the humor and the detail of his work. For anyone interested in the art of the tattoo, the book is an essential purchase. My next piece is his classic cowgirl for my back (oh, and I am a woman and I can appreciate that his stuff was not just for sailors).

Scramble: A Narrative History of the Battle of Britain
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (05 December, 1986)
Author: Norman Gelb
Average review score:

Scramble
This book is an oral history of the Battle of Britain.

Rich in detail and anecdote, Scramble develops a picture of sacrifice and heroism behind the stiff upper lips of the men who fought.

Like the best history, it is also wonderful storytelling, keeping the reader in suspense even when he knows how things will turn out.

Norman Gelb is the author of numerous World War II books, none of which fail to entertain, educate and please. This one is his best.

Author: Lilith Norman
Average review score:

Brilliant writing. I've never forgotten it.
Wonderful story of separated twins raised in different class environments in Australia, and what happens to the respective families when they try to "switch back". I read this for the first time when I was 8, and for the next few years, checked it out of the library as often as possible. Great characters, families. Good teen book.
